Environmental mainstreaming
Environmental mainstreaming is the informed inclusion of relevant environmental concerns into the decisions of institutions that drive national, local and sectoral development policies, rules, plans, investment and action. Barry Dalal-Clayton's work on this theme has included:
- Led study of role of hydropower in driving transition to a green economy in Nepal and Himalayan region, with the Asian Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (September-December 2012).
- Facilitated Asian regional workshop on environmental mainstreaming for a green economy, hosted in Nepal, May 2012, Nepal.
- Coordinated Environment Mainstreaming Initiative in Nepal (2011- 2012) – diagnostic analysis of mainstreaming experience in Nepal; scoping meetings; national workshop on environmental mainstreaming (Oct 2011) leading to development of national report. Also coordinated writing and production of accompanying environment song with Nepal singer Komal Oli.

(I) National report on environmental mainstreaming in Nepal, (ii) launch by Vice President of Nepal, and (iii) accompanying song on CD (to download song, see file below) - Facilitated series of stakeholder workshops on environmental mainstreaming in cities (Manila, Entebbe, Accra in 2012) – in collaboration with UNEP.

- Facilitated workshop on green economy in support of developing a partnership programme for the Astana Green Bridge Initiative, Kazakhstan, July 2011.
Addressing Astana Economic Forum 2011 - Technical advice and support to Poverty-Environment Initiative (Botswana) and government of Botswana on environmental mainstreaming and development of National Strategy for Sustainable Development (2010 - ). Activities included stakeholder workshops; studies and consultancies; joint work (e.g. poverty-environment / local economy studies); training and capacity-building.
With Hon Kitso Mokaila, Minister of Environment, Wildlife & Tourism, Botswana
- Adviser and peer reviewer to African Development Bank on environmental mainstreaming initiatives (particularly in the roads sector) and design of country mainstreaming case study work (2010-2011).
- Co- author of book on the Challenges of Environmental Mainstreaming - examining international experience of integrating environment into development institutions and decisions.

- International consultant on environmental mainstreaming to Danida MPL programme, Vietnam (2009)
- Coordinating initiative to investigate the challenges of environmental mainstreaming and gather stakeholder perspectives on tools, methods and tactics (2007 – 2009). Involved 10 country surveys and work with UNEP-UNDP Poverty Environment Initiative.
