Sustainability appraisal of key sectors in Botswana, and linking the SDGs to Botswana's Vision Beyond 2016
In 2014-2015, Barry Dalal-Clayton was commissioned by UNDP-Botswana to provide technical support to integrate sustainable development concerns in the development of Botswana's new Vision Beyond 2016 and in the development of its 11th National Development Plan. This included, between January-July 2015, leading sustainability appraisals of five key sectors: mining, agriculture, energy, tourism and water. Sustainability appraisal/assessment
Starting in 2003, working with collaborator Barry Sadler, Barry Dalal-Clayton began exploring the emerging field of sustainability appraisal/assessment (SA). Over the next decade, a series of workshops were organised, and an extensive rolling review was undertaken of international experience. This culminated in the publication in 2014 of Sustainability Appraisal by Earhscan/Routledge (available at: www.routledge.com/u/clayton/).
This state-of-the-art analysis of the status and scope of Sustainability Appraisal/Assessment (SA) highlights how SA can be used to integrate the key environmental, social and economic pillars of sustainability into decision-making at all levels, from policy to project to investment, by government, business and industry, or international organizations. The book distils both published and unpublished materials, as well as in-depth workshop discussions and contributions from a range of leading experts, organizations and agencies.
